Error: Error starting program due to virtual memory settings are too low.
Error:
Error starting program. There is not enough memory to start <filename>. Quit some programs and try again.
Cause:
The virtual memory settings are too low. This error occurs most frequently on systems with less than 8 MB of available extended memory.
Solution:
Double-click 'System' and increase the virtual memory settings.
NOTE: The following task should be performed by a qualified computer technician.
1) Click the 'Start' button to display the 'Start' menu and select 'Settings'.
2) Select 'Control Panel'. (The 'Control Panel' window appears.)
'Control Panel'
3) Select 'System'. (The 'System Properties' dialog box appears.)
'System' icon
4) Click the 'Performance' tab. (The 'Performance' tabbed page appears.)
5) Click 'Virtual Memory...'. (The 'Virtual Memory' dialog box appears.)
CAUTION: It is advisable to let Windows adjust the virtual memory (swap file) settings automatically. Manually adjusting settings should be done by a qualified computer technician or under the supervision of next-level support.
6) Select 'Let me specify my own virtual memory settings.'
'Virtual memory'
a) Type the hard disk on which the swap file is to be created. (Select the disk with the most free space and the drive with the fastest performance.)
NOTE 1: Performance may be boosted by placing the swap file on a drive that is not as busy.
EXAMPLE: Avoid placing it on the disk with the user software.
NOTE 2: Do not use a drive that has been compressed using a third-party compression utility.
b) Type the minimum size of the swap file in the 'Set Minimum' box. (Windows does not decrease the size of the swap file below this number.)
c) Type the maximum size of the swap file.
NOTE: The size of the swap file depends on how much RAM the computer has.
EXAMPLE: If the computer has 4 MB of RAM, at least 10 MB of free disk space are required for a swap file. If the computer has 16 MB of memory, very little disk space will be required for a swap file.
7) Click 'OK' and click 'OK again.
NOTE: It is advisable to defragment the hard drive to optimize performance of the swap file.
